DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The 19th-ranked New Mexico women’s golf team carded a 17-over par 305 in the opening round of the NCAA National Championships Tuesday and currently sits in 13th place. The Lobos were led by junior Giselle Claux after carding a 2-over par 74 at the LPGA International Legends Golf Course. Claux is tied for 13th individually heading into the second round.
Claux fired a strong first round that included an even par front nine with a birdie. Heading into day two, Claux remains just five strokes behind UC-Irvine’s Selanee Henderson for the lead.
Freshman Jodi Ewart is tied for 39th after shooting a 4-over par 76. Sophomore Py Bengttson carded a 77 and is tied for 53rd. Junior Alexandra Phelps was 6-over par 78 in the first round and is tied for 72nd. Sophomore Mikaela Backstedt fired an 11-over par 83 and is tied for 114th.
Southern California leads the tournament at 7-over par 295. North Carolina and Louisville are tied for second at 9-over par 297. Henderson has a shot advantage individually over Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst and Stanford’s Lauren Todd.
The Lobos were paired with Louisville and Michigan State in the first round.
