ST. GEORGE, Utah — The 19th-ranked New Mexico women’s golf team advanced to their 13th NCAA Championship Saturday after placing eighth in the West Regional held at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Golf Course. The Lobos shot a 14-over par in the finals and finished the tournament 56-over par as a team. Freshman Jodi Ewart tied for seventh individually after shooting a 1-over par 72 on the final day.
Ewart shot a 218 for the three-day event and finished 5-over par. Ewart opened the tournament with a round of even par 71, fired a 75 on day two and a 72 in the finals. Sophomore Mikaela Backstedt and junior Giselle Claux tied for 38th after finishing the event at 15-over par. Sophomore Py Bengtsson was 24-over par for the event and 12-over par in the finals to tie for 66th. Junior Alexandra Phelps was 81st after shooting 28-over.
The Lobos advance to their 13th NCAA Championship and the first since the 2004 season. UNM has placed in the top 10 at the NCAA’s on five occasions, including sixth back in 1985. The Lobos will host the 2008 NCAA’s at the UNM Championship Course in May of next year.
Oklahoma State and Stanford tied for the team title at 22-over par for the tournament. Arizona State finished in third at 24-over par. OSU’s Pernilla Lindberg captured the individual title by seven strokes over Anna Nordqvist from Arizona State.
