ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Saturday, May 12 is the final home game of the 2007 season for the Lobo baseball team and they are going out with a bang. Tickets are just $2 as New Mexico hosts Youth Day at Isotopes Park, sponsored by Comcast and 610 the Sports Animal.
The day’s festivities are all about the children. Kidz Jump will be in the outfield and there will be a silent auction benefitting the Ambrose Alday Scholarship Fund.
The Lobo Baseball Pen Pal Program sponsored by Sweet Tomatoes, which matches players from the UNM Baseball team with middle school and elementary age children in the Albuquerque area, also concludes on Saturday. The students have written back and forth with their Lobo Pen Pal all semester and will have a chance to meet their Pen Pal following the game. This program is an excellent way to teach writing skills and it gives these children a chance to meet the stars of tomorrow!
The 2007 Read With the Lobos programs was also recently completed and results of the six-week program show that 846 students participated from 28 schools across New Mexico. These students together read a total of 8,009 books! Read With the Lobos is a community relations project sponsored by New Mexico Student Loans and conducted by the University of New Mexico Athletics Department.
All the winning students from the Spring session (4 from elementary, 4 from middle schools), together with Tilly Dewey, Librarian at Los Lunas Elementary School, will be recognized at Youth Day celebrations for Lobo Baseball on Saturday, May 12. Top reader Jennifer Grajeda has been invited to throw out the first pitch at the game. For more information on the program and the days’s events, click here.
