Colorado Springs, Colo. – The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team fell 4-1 to the regular season co-champions and 31st ranked BYU in the semifinal round of the Mountain West Conference Championship today at the Air Force Academy. The Lobos end their 2007 season with a 12-11, 5-5 MWC record.
The Lobos matched up against the No. 1 seed and despite a hard fought effort they were unable to get the doubles match point. In singles New Mexico had to battle the umpires overruling the Lobos calls all day causing frustration amongst the players. Junior Jennifer Ryba earned New Mexico’s only point through one of her best matches of the season against BYU’s Dolly Chang at the No. 6 spot. Ryba dominated both sets and ended up finishing with a 6-2, 6-3 score. Senior Nora Quintal was in the middle of her match point when they stopped the match due to BYU’s fourth earned match point. Quintal was up 7-6 (3), 5-3 when the match was called.
