The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is tied for fifth at the Mountain West Conference Championship after shooting a 3-over, 287 in the second round today at the Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. UNM is 8-over after two rounds (289-287=576) and tied with Colorado State. BYU still leads the tournament at 8-under par (272-288=560).
UNM had the second-lowest team round of the day behind a pair of 68’s from senior Charlie Beljan and sophomore Steve Saunders. Beljan was rolling through his round before posting a bogey on 18. He carded six birdies and three bogeys at the 7,136-yard, par-71 Catalina Course. He is in 8th place in the individual race at 2-under par (72-78=140), four strokes off the pace set by three players – UNLV’s Seung-su Han (65-71=136, -6), TCU’s Robby Ormand (68-68=136, -6) and San Diego State’s Adam Porzak (67-69=136, -6)
Saunders posted five birdies and two bogeys in one of his best rounds of the season. He is tied for ninth at 1-under (73-68=141). Robb Bierbaum shot a 75 in the second round and is 7-over after 36 holes (74-75=149). Freshman Kyle Nielsen is four over for the championships (70-76=146), shooting a 76 today while sophomore Parker Pemberton finished with a 78 in the second round (79-78=157, +15).
The MWC Championships conclude tomorrow at the Tucson National Golf Club. UNM will have to make up 16 strokes on the field to capture its fifth straight MWC title.
