The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is off to a rough start to the 2007 Mountain West Conference Championships, shooting a 5-over par 289 in the first round. BYU leads the event at 12-under (272) at the Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. Freshman Kyle Nielsen was the only Lobo in red numbers today, carding a 1-under 70 on the par-71 Catalina Course. UNLV’s Seung-su Han leads thee individual race at 6-under par (65).

Nielsen had a very steady round today, with a pair of birdies and one bogey, equaling his lowest round of the season. Senior Charlie Beljan shot a 1-over 72. He got off to a hot start with three birdies in his first five holes. However, double-bogeys on nine and 18 kept him from posting an under-par score on the day.

The normally steady sophomore Steve Saunders was up and down his entire back nine, finishing with a 73 in the first round. He went out in an even-par 35, but had three birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey on the back to post a 38 coming in. Junior Robb Bierbaum was steady throughout most of his round today, but a double-bogey on 18 left him with a 3-over 74. The Lobos gave up five shots overall on the final hole. Sophomore Parker Pemberton also played today, posting a 79.

The Lobos continue play the MWC Championships tomorrow at the Tucson National Golf Club. New Mexico will have to dig out of a 17-stroke hole to win its fifth-consecutive MWC title.
