COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Junior Max Jones earned his third straight nod to the All-Mountain West Conference singles team and his second straight to the doubles team, announced this evening at the annual Championship Banquet that kicks off tournament play each year. Junior Kamil Pajkowski, Jones’ doubles partner, made the doubles team for the second straight year while sophomore Johnny Parkes placed on the singles team for the second time.
Jones, playing at No. 1 singles for New Mexico almost all season, is 6-13 in dual matches and 16-15 overall. Parkes, who led the team in dual matches with a 15-7 record including a 9-5 mark at No. 2, is 23-13 overall this year. In doubles, Jones and Pajkowski teamed at No. 1, going 9-5. The tandem is 18-9 overall.
The all-conference teams and honors are selected by the head coaches of the Mountain West Conference. San Diego State’s Markus Dickhardt, who was the MWC’s Freshman of the Year in 2004, was named the Player of the Year while his coach, former Lobo Gene Carswell, earned his third straight Coach of the Year award. The Aztecs’ Achim Ceban took home Freshman of the Year honors, ending New Mexico’s two-year streak claiming the award.
Dickhardt placed on the singles team for the fourth time in his career while BYU’s James Ludlow was the only other three-time performer on the list besides Jones. Joining Parkes as two-time all-conference performers are SDSU’s Christian Groh and Utah’s Zach Ganger. Air Force’s Robby Alexander, BYU’s Christian Hand, TCU’s Chris Biro and Cosmin Cotet, UNLV’s Elliot Wronski and Utah’s Miron Mann were honored for the first time in their careers.
BYU’s tandem of Dominik Kaufhold and James Ludlow highlighted the doubles list, placing for the third straight year. Jones and Pajkowski were the only other tandem to make the cut for the second time. First-time honorees are SDSU’s Dickhardt and Groh, TCU’s Cotet and Kriegler Bring, UNLV’s Wronski and Brett Hunter and Ganger and Mann from Utah.
Championship play gets underway tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. with fourth-seeded New Mexico taking on fifth-seeded BYU. The tournament is being hosted by Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo.
