Silvey Dominguez, a 1977 graduate of the University of New Mexico, takes over as Director of Basketball Operations for the Lobos under new head coach Steve Alford. Dominguez spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach at Wyoming. He has coached at three other schools in the Mountain West Conference, including Utah, Colorado State and Air Force.

“We are very fortunate to get Silvey,” stated UNM head coach Steve Alford. “He has been in the Mountain West Conference a long time and he has been with really good coaches and programs. I like the fact that he is a New Mexico graduate and knows this area really well. Getting him back to New Mexico as the Director of Operations is something we are excited about.”

Dominguez, 54, spent one season (2002-03) at Utah where he was Rick Majerus’ top assistant before he went to Wyoming for the 2003-04 season. Prior to his stint at Utah, Dominguez was an assistant for one season at UTEP in 2001-02. He also was an assistant at Southern California for five seasons (1997-01), helping guide the Trojans to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament in 2001. USC also made two other postseason appearances, going to the NCAAs in 1997 and the NIT in 1999.

Three players Dominguez recruited to USC were selected in the NBA Draft, including Brian Scalabrine and Jeff Trepagnier in 2001 and Sam Clancy in 2002.

Dominguez began as an assistant at Western New Mexico from 1979-82. He also coached at Southern Colorado from 1984-86 before joining Boyd Grant’s staff at Colorado State from 1986-88. After two seasons with the Rams, he moved to Air Force from 1988-91 under Falcon head coach Reggie Minton. Following his stint at the Academy, Dominguez was an assistant at St. Mary’s (Calif.) from 1991-96.

A native of Grants, N.M., Dominguez graduated from UNM in 1977 with a degree in Political Science and Spanish. He earned his MBA from Western New Mexico in 1981. Dominguez is married to the former Debora McDonald.
