UNM Women’s Golf Remains In Third Place at MWC Championships

ST. GEORGE, Utah —The 16th-ranked New Mexico women’s golf team fired a team best 20-over par 304 Friday in the second round of the Mountain West Conference Championship held at the par 71, 6,210 yard Entrada at Snow Canyon Golf Course. The Lobos remain in third place at 50-over par for the three-day event but improved their team score by 10 strokes. Individually, UNM freshman Jodi Ewart fired a round of even par-71 and jumped into a tie for second.

Ewart leaped into contention for the individual title after moving up the leaderboard 10 spots. Ewart has a tournament total of 148 and is only two strokes behind Rachel Newren of BYU for the lead.

Junior Giselle Claux (83-72=155) shot a 1-over par 72 in the second round and is in 13th place. Sophomore Py Bengtsson (79-81=160) carded a 10-over par 81 on the day and is tied for 21st. Sophomore Mikaela Backstedt stayed tied for 23rd after shooting a round of 9-over par 80. Backstedt has fired rounds of 81 and 80 for a total score of 161. Junior Alexandra Phelps is tied for 28th and is 21-over par for the championship. Phelps carded an 86 in the second round.

BYU leads the event at 32-over par 600, while TCU is in second at 38-over par 606. The Lobos are third and have a nine shot lead on Colorado State in fourth.
