New Mexico head coach didn’t wait long to see if his team was awake this morning, putting the team through a spirited 10-minute scrimmage to open Wednesday’s practice. The Lobos took the field at 5:50 a.m. to warm-up on the crisp spring morning before offense and defense went head-to-head for the first full contact action of 2007.
After the scrimmage, Long took a short break to do a live interview with Mike Powers on KRQE’s morning news show as the team broke into individual unit drills. As they’ve done the first two days, the Lobos moved into University Stadium for the second half of practice and finished the morning with another scrimmage session.
The offense had its moments as senior hit redshirt freshman on a well-executed wide receiver screen play and sophomore floated a perfect pass deep down the sideline, past diving senior , to senior for a touchdown.
The defense also had its share of success as sophomore cornerback jumped a slant route and nearly came up with an interception. The front six also did a nice job of giving the running backs very little room to operate.
There was only one thing missing from this morning’s practice – the fierce spring winds that have whipped across the field the past two days. In fact, the conditions were perfect in the stadium after the sun rose over the Sandia Mountains.
I spoke with senior linebacker and head coach after practice. Click on the links below to hear what they had to say about the early morning start and the first day of full pads contact.
