Albuquerque, N.M. – On the last day of the regular season for 73rd ranked New Mexico, the Lobos soared past the Air Force Falcons in a shutout performance (7-0) to sweep the weekend in shutout matches and bring the Lobos’ record to 11-10, 4-4 MWC going into the Mountain West Conference Tournament.

“It was a special day being senior day,” said head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz, “and we won this match in honor of our four seniors; Iva Gersic, Nora Quintal, Allison Davis and Elisa Bonner. This was their day. They have been an integral part of this team’s success the past four years. Congratulations to them for all of their accomplishments both on and off the tennis court.”

In doubles action New Mexico took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions. Sandra Zmak and Lucy Scott defeated Christine Abayan and Lauren Wilson in an easy 8-1 doubles match taking the No. 1 spot while Ola Abou-Zekry and Jennifer Ryba ended the No. 2 match with an 8-5 victory over Kelly Morgan and Jennifer Walker.

New Mexico continued to dominate singles play with five of the six wins coming in two sets or less and the opponents were allowed over three points in only one of the sets. = Abou-Zekry led the Lobos at the No. 1 position defeating Abayan in a 6-3, 6-2 match. Zmak took a win at the No. 2 spot with a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Wilson. Mackenzie White went into a tiebreaker set at the No. 3 position posting a 3-6, 6-1 (10-5) victory over Meghan Kiser. Senior Nora Quintal was the only senior to play singles and won her match 6-3, 6-2 against Walker. At the No. 5 spot Scott sported a 6-2, 6-1 win against Morgan and Ryba finished out the wins with a 6-0, 6-4 match against Erlyn Rudico.

“We’re on a roll having won the last four matches,” said Kolankiewicz. “We’re heading into the conference tournament with a 4 match win streak and our confidence is high. There are 5 teams capable of winning the MWC tournament and we are one of them.”
