The University of New Mexico men’s golf team is in a tie for 12th place after the first round of Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational with a 3-over par total of 291. Senior Charlie Beljan posted a 6-under 66 and sits in second place in the individual standings. Oregon leads the event at 11-under par, while the Ducks’ Derek Sipe leads the individual race at 7-under par.

Beljan had seven birdies and one bogey on his way to his second lowest round of the season at the par-72 Karsten course in Tempe, Ariz. Sophomore Steve Saunders continued his solid play with a 71 on three birdies and two bogeys in the round. Junior Robb Bierbaum shot a 76 in the opening round while sophomore Kyle Nielsen finished with a 78. Sophomore Parker Pemberton also played for UNM today, firing an 80.
