SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The 47th-ranked Lobo men’s tennis team won its second straight match over the BYU Cougars this afternoon thanks to a come-from-behind 4-3 victory in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams. New Mexico lost the doubles point but rallied with four singles wins, including Max Jones’ 6-1, 6-2 upset of No. 105 James Ludlow at No. 1.
The morning started off with the Cougars winning at No. 1 and 3 doubles, 8-2 and 8-3, respectively. When the point had been decided, sophomores Miles Bugby and Johnny Parkes were tied 7 all with BYU at No. 2. The won the next game, clinching the set, 8-7.
Jones handed Ludlow his fourth straight loss in singles, getting the Lobos started. Parkes followed with his third straight singles win, topping Dominik Kaufhold 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2.
Junior Kamil Pajkowski also netted a two-set win in singles, handing Cale Planck a 6-3, 6-4 loss at No. 6. Bugby clinched the match at No. 4. He fell in the first set, 4-6, but rallied 6-3 in the second and 6-1 in the third.
New Mexico, 12-5 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain West, return to the court tomorrow, taking on 52nd-ranked San Diego State. The Aztecs have the last two meetings with the Lobos.
