Fort Worth, Texas – The No. 58 University of New Mexico women’s tennis team (7-7) fell in a 6-1 match to the 2006 Mountain West Conference Champions, No. 41 TCU (10-7) in Fort Worth yesterday to begin their conference play.
The Lobos looked to be on the right track after winning their first doubles match in over three dual matches. Nora Quintal and doubles partner Mackenzie White posted an 8-2 victory at the No. 3 spot over TCU’s Amy Beck and Kewa Nichols. However, in singles play the MWC Tournament Champions stormed the courts and New Mexico was unable to keep the momentum taking one spot before falling in the match. At the No. 6 spot Jennifer Ryba had a huge win against Beck in a 6-0 6-0 shutout match.
“It was a good hard fought match,” said head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz. “We split sets 1, 2 and 3 against three very good players who are all ranked in the top 100.”
Tomorrow, the Lobos will take on UNLV who is only ranked two spots ahead of UNM at No. 56. The match is set for 10:00 a.m. with the Lobos in hot pursuit of their first win in conference play.
