AUSTIN, Texas – The 13th-ranked Texas men’s tennis team held off the surging 40th-ranked Lobos Saturday afternoon, earning a 4-3 win in the first meeting of the two programs since 1997.
The Longhorns grabbed the first point, taking the first two doubles matches. Junior Chris Parkes and sophomore Graeme Kassautzki kept the Lobos from being swept, handing Jonah Kane-West and Milan Mihailovic an 8-6 loss.
Texas went up 3-0 after singles wins at No. 1 and 4. The loss at No. 4 (6-1, 6-1) for sophomore Miles Bugby snapped his eight-match win streak. UT clinched the match with a three-set victory at No. 3.
Junior Kamil Pajkowski garnered the Lobos first point of the match, netting a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 6 over Johan Kane-West. Sophomore Johnny Parkes clinched the team’s second point, wining 7-6, 2-6, 10-7 against Milan Mihailovic. Johnny Parkes solidified the final point, winning his ninth straight match with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory at No. 5.
The Lobos return to the court tomorrow, taking on 49th-ranked Texas A&M in College Station. It’s New Mexico’s final game before Mountain West Conference play begins next weekend.
