Malibu, Calif. – The 53rd ranked New Mexico women’s tennis team (7-5) suffered a 5-2 loss to the No. 24 Rams of Virginia Commonwealth today in a neutral match that took place at Pepperdine.
The Lobos took on solid doubles teams from the Rams including Ola Abou-Zekry and Lucy Scott’s match-up against the No. 9 duo of Yuferova and Borisova in an 8-4 defeat. Virginia Commonwealth took all three doubles matches before moving into singles play.
In singles action No. 92 Abou-Zekry had a huge upset over No. 68 Marianna Yuferova at the No. 1 singles position for one of the two Lobo match points, winning 7-5, 7-5. Sandra Zmak pulled in the second point after defeating Maria Klokotzky in a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
The Lobos take a day off tomorrow before taking on No. 26 Pepperdine in an away match to round up their California trip.
