BOULDER CITY, Nev. — New Mexico women’s golf carded a 284 team score on Monday during the first round of the UNLV Spring Invitational to stand alone in second place at the Boulder Creek Golf Club.
The Lobos’s 4-under total is four shots behind tournament leader BYU and a shot ahead of Indiana at third. UNM fired 16 birdies as a team in the opening round and have three golfers in the top-10 individually.
Freshman Jodi Ewart is tied for second individually after shooting a 4-under par 68 in the first round and remains only a shot behind Rachel Newren of BYU for the lead.
Sophomore Mikaela Backstedt and junior Alexandra Phelps shot a 1-under par 71 for the day and are tied for 10th. Sophomore Py Bengtsson is tied for 33rd at 2-over par 74, while junior Giselle Claux carded an 80 and is tied for 84th.
UNM will return to the par-72, 6,199-yard layout for its second round tomorrow at 8 a.m.
