With the victory, New Mexico now moves to 4-0 in MWC championship games. BYU drops to 14-7 in the MWC tournament and 1-5 in championship games. The game was tied at 9-9 until the 8:33 mark when New Mexico began a 7-0 run over the next 1:36 to give the Lobos a lead of seven points. BYU’s 17 first-half points ties for the seventh-fewest points in a half in MWC Tournament history and ties for the fewest (UNLV, 2002) in a final-round game and is Lobos’ lowest output in a half this season. New Mexico held a 13-point lead, 30-17, with 17:44 to play when BYU went on a 10-2 run to close the gap to 32-27 with 13:27 to play. The Cougars then went on an 8-2 run to take the lead, 37-36, with 8:44 remaining in the game on a Mallary Gillespie lay-up. With 10 points and 14 rebounds, BYU’s Lauren Riley recorded the fifth double-double of her career. Her 14 rebounds are the most by a player in the final round and also matches a career-high. The Lobos’ five team blocks ties for the most in a final round game in the MWC tournament. New Mexico scored 20 points on 14 BYU turnovers, compared to five Cougar points off 11 Lobo turnovers. New Mexico’s Brandi Kimble set a new tournament record with nine total steals in three games. The Lobos closed the game on a 14-2 run that started with 3:55 left in the game.
