University of New Mexico senior Alpine skier Lars Loeseth placed fifth in today’s men’s giant slalom at the 2007 NCAA Championships in Jackson, N.H. The top-10 finish gave Loeseth All-American honors in all four years of his Lobo career, just the fourth skier in school history to accomplaish that feat. New Mexico moved up three spots to ninth place in the overall team standings with 177 points. Dartmouth took over the team lead with 330 points after four of eight events. Denver (329), Utah (280), Colorado (275) and Vermont (211.5) round out the top five.
Loeseth wasn’t the only Lobo to score an All-American finish in today’s men’s giant slalom. Sophomore Tor Fodnesbergene placed eighth overall, earn his second All-American honor at UNM. The top-10 finishers in each of the eight races earn All-American status. Senior Alex Mach also raced for the Lobo men today, placing 16th overall and leading the Lobo men to a second place finish in the giant slalom team race. Denver’s Adam Cole won the individual, also leading the Pioneers to the team giant slalom championship.
The Lobo women were led by sophmore Karin Ohlin’s 22nd place finish. Freshman Malin Hemmingson stumbled during her second run, crossing the line in 33rd place. Action continues tomorrow with the men’s and women’s Nordic classic races.
