University of New Mexico skier Lars Loeseth has been named the 2007 Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association’s men’s Alpine Skier of the Year. Loeseth posted top-10s in eight of nine races, including two giant slalom wins in the 2007 regular season. He was also the No. 1 giant slalom skier in the RMISA and ranked seventh in the slalom.
In four giant slalom races on the year, Loeseth scored wins at Denver and New Mexico, and had second place finishes at Montana State and Utah. His six career wins are tied for the most among Alpine men in school history.
Loeseth will try to become just the fourth Lobo to earn All-American honors all four years when he hits the slopes at the 2007 NCAA Championships in Jackson, N.H., on March 7-10. Loeseth will be among the favorites to win the giant slalom individual championship, a feat no other Lobo has ever accomplished.
At two-sport star at New Mexico, Loeseth was also a two-year member of the nationally ranked men’s soccer team. He has been a part of three of the top teams in Lobo history, including the 2004 NCAA Champion ski team, the 2005 NCAA runner-up men’s soccer team and the 2006 ski team that finished second at the NCAA Championships.
