COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Junior left hander Bobby LaFromboise and San Diego State sophomore Nick Romero have been named Mountain West Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively. This is the first career weekly award for both recipients.
LaFromboise, a Downey, Calif., native, led New Mexico to an upset victory over No. 7 Nebraska last week, tallying his first win of the season in the process. In 8.0 innings of work, he gave up just three hits, three walks and one earned run, while striking out nine. After the Cornhuskers scored a run in the first innings, LaFromboise settled in and allowed just two hits over the next five innings. He fanned two batters in the first, third and fourth innings en route to his nine strikeouts.
Romero, from Chula Vista, Calif., went 7-for-13 (.538) from the plate, with a slugging percentage of 1.077, three triples, one double, six runs scored and one RBI in four games last week. In San Diego State’s 10-6 win over Loyola Marymount, Romero went 2-for-2 with two triples, two runs scored and a stolen base. His two triples ties the MWC and SDSU school record for most triples in a single game. He reached base in all five at-bats vs. the Lions. In the first game of a three-game series vs. No. 21 USC, Romero went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in a 3-7 loss. In game two of the series,he turned in a 1-for-3 performance, one RBI and one run scored performance. In the bottom of the eighth, Romero smacked a two-out RBI triple, which put SDSU up 4-2 heading into the ninth inning, before the Aztecs lost 5-4. In the rubber game of the series, Romero went 1-for-4 with a double and one run scored as San Diego State upset the 21st-ranked Trojans, 12-11.
