Albuquerque, N.M. – In their first match at home the University of New Mexico women’s tennis team defeated the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in a 6-1 victory tonight at the Lobo Tennis Club.

The Lobos started the night off on a good note as they won all three of the doubles matches. Iva Gersic and Ola Abou-Zekry led the team at the No. 1 doubles spot defeating NAU’s Leslie Vial and Katie Schurr 8-3. Lucy Scott and Sandra Zmak teamed up against their opponents Susan McClelland and Patrice Biemold for a perfect 8-0 win. Rounding out the doubles and extending their spring record to 3-0 were Mackenzie White and Jennifer Ryba in a win over Paij Porter and Stacey Pinchbeck (8-5).

The team continued their efforts in the singles match taking all but one. Gersic dominated her opponent, Biemold, at the No. 1 spot with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Zmak finished second at the No. 4 spot taking on Vial and winning 6-2, 6-1 while White clinched the match at the No. 3 spot against McClelland in a 6-2. 6-4 defeat. Abou-Zekry fought hard at the No. 2 spot and came away the victor against Schurr at No. 2 (7-5, 4-6 (10-6)) and Scott finished up the wins at No. 5 in a long battle that ended in a 7-6, 6-2 win.
