ARLINGTON, Texas – The New Mexico baseball (3-4) team upset seventh-ranked Nebraska in the night cap of the Hilton Arlington Tournament, snapping an eight-game losing streak to the Huskers. Juniors Jordan Pacheco and Drew McDonald led UNM at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run and 2-for-3 with three RBI, respectively. On the mound, junior Bobby LaFromboise turned in a three-hit, one run, 8.0 inning performance.

Nebraska opened the scoring in the first inning, grabbing a 1-0 lead on an Andy Gerch RBI-double to right. LaFromboise settled in and allowed just two hits over the next five innings.

Senior center fielder Matt Foote led off the third inning with a double down the right field line and scored on a throwing error by Nebraska’s catcher. Pacheco laid down a sacrifice bunt, putting senior left fielder Jay Russell at third, who then scored on a ground out from senior first baseman Daniel Stovall.

The Lobos extended their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a single to center by McDonald with runners at second and third. One inning later, Pacheco doubled to left and scored on a single from Stovall. McDonald drove in Stovall with another single, this time to right, putting the Lobos up 6-1.

With two outs in the ninth, Nebraska tapped sophomore Brandon Hewett for a run on two hits but it wasn’t enough. Hewett got Craig Corriston to strike out swinging to give UNM their first win over a ranked opponent in their last five tries.

The Lobos resume tournament play tomorrow, taking on Illinois State at 11:30 a.m. CT/10:30 p.m. MT.
