DENVER, Colo. – The 55th-ranked Denver Pioneers captured a 6-1 win over the Lobo men’s tennis team late Saturday night, improving to 4-1 in dual matches this season and dropping New Mexico to 3-2 overall.
In doubles action, UNM avoided the sweep with a win at No. 2 by juniors Kamil Pajkowksi and Chris Parkes. The duo netted an 8-6 win over Nejc Smole and Ravjot Dhatt to stay undefeated (3-0) at No. 2 doubles.
Denver’s Adam Holmstrom and Niklas Persson garnered an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over sophomores Miles Bugby and Johnny Parkes while 44th-ranked Kalle Rosen and Timo Kienle slipped by sophomore Graeme Kassautzki and freshman Joe Nicolazzi, 8-6, for the team doubles point.
New Mexico’s lone point of the match came at No. 6 singles as Nicolazzi cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Dhatt. Nicolazzi is now perfect at 2-0 in dual match singles action.
In other singles competition, 21st-ranked Holmstom edged out Johnny Parkes, 7-6, 6-1 at No. 1 while Smole topped Kassautzki, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2. Pajkowski fell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 to Kienle and Bugby lost 6-2, 7-6 at No. 4 to Persson. Chris Parkes rallied from a first set loss but couldn’t hold on in the 10-point tie breaker that was played for the third set, falling 7-6, 1-6, 10-7.
The Lobos return to Albuquerque, taking the next three weeks off before hitting the court again. They host New Mexico State, Friday, March 2 at 6 p.m., Nevada on Saturday, March 3 at 4 p.m. and Sacramento State Sunday, March 4 at 2 p.m.
