Lubbock, Texas – The No. 41 University of New Mexico women’s tennis team took on the No. 50 Texas Tech Raiders today and came out the winner in a close 4-3 match that was held at the Texas Tech McLeod Tennis Center.
New Mexico began the day taking the doubles point after winning at the No. 1 and 3 spots. Iva Gersic and Ola Abou-Zekry teamed up at the No. 1 spot to defeat Anne Sophie Fankam and Lakann Wagley in a fast 8-2 match. Jennifer Ryba and Mackenzie White won the No. 3 spot 8-3 against Maria Jose Andres and Kerryn Potgeiter.
The started the singles matches on a tough note falling to 1-2 in points, but freshman Sandra Zmak jump started the singles wins at the No. 4 spot in a comeback match winning 0-6, 6-1, 6-0 against Fankam. From there Abou-Zekry took the No. 2 spot in a win against Wagley (6-3, 2-6, 6-0) and Nora Quintal clinched the match with a No. 6 win facing Andres (6-2, 6-4).
“Both teams played extremely well,” said head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz. “We were fortunate to come out with a win and I’m really proud of the team.”
The women’s tennis team will be back in action on Friday February, 16 at home in the Lobo Tennis Club. The match starts at 6:00 p.m. and the Lobos will be taking on Northern Arizona. Come out and support your Lobos!
