Lubbock, Texas – The University of New Mexico women’s tennis team began their regular season in a shutout against UTEP today in a neutral match held at the McLeod Tennis Center at Texas Tech University.

“This was a great first match for us,” said head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz. “UTEP is a much improved team that fights hard. We had to focus and play well to beat them. We’ll need to kick it up a notch when we play Texas Tech in less than 12 hours.”

The match began with the Lobos taking the doubles point after winning at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Lucy Scott and Sandra Zmak teamed up at the No. 2 spot to defeat UTEP’s Isabela Kulaif and Marina Deluca while Jennifer Ryba and Mackenzie White took a win against Amber Brightly and Vicky Michand.

The strong start in doubles carried over to the singles action with all six positions being won by New Mexico players. Iva Gersic led the Lobos at the No. 1 spot with a win against Weronika Bloczynska 7-6, 6-2. At the No. 2 spot Ola Abou-Zekry defeated Kulaif in a 6-3, 6-4 win while White had a victory against DeLuca 7-5, 6-4. Zmak held the No. 4 spot against Kat Palider, 6-3, 6-2, Scott won the No. 5 spot in a 7-5, 6-4 match against Pritchard and to finish out the singles Nora Quintal defeated Harmonie Chatagner 6-3, 7-6.

The Lobos take on Texas Tech tomorrow at nine in the morning. The match was originally scheduled for ten but had to be changed due to the weather.
