ITA TEAM MOUNTAIN REGIONAL: The New Mexico men’s tennis team heads to Boise, Idaho this weekend for the ITA Mountain Regional Team Playoffs at the Boas Tennis Complex on the campus of Boise State. The top-4 teams in the region, Boise State, BYU, UNM and UNLV, respectively, are vying for a trip to the National Indoor Championships Feb. 16-18 in Chicago.

The Lobos open play against second-seeded and 73rd-ranked BYU at 12:30 p.m. Top-seeded host and 25th-ranked Boise State opens the day with fourth-seeded and 64th-ranked UNLV at 9:30 a.m. The winners will play in a championship match later in the day to determine which team will represent the region at the 16-team indoor national competition.

JONES EARNS NATIONAL SINGLES RANKING: Junior Max Jones was ranked No. 73 in singles in the ITA’s first rankings of the spring season, which came out Jan. 9. He was ranked 90th in the fall. At 10-2 overall, he is undefeated this spring, going 3-0 in singles at the Boilermaker Invitational. He had a convincing 6-4, 6-4 win over 52nd-ranked Brady Crosby of Western Michigan.

LAST TIME OUT: The Lobos opened the 2007 spring season at the Boilermaker Invitational hosted by Purdue University. UNM took on Purdue, Western Michigan and Kentucky but the event was not scored as a team competition. Junior Max Jones and sophomores Graeme Kassautzki and Johnny Parkes all went undefeated in single play, going 3-0, 2-0 and 2-0, respectively. In doubles, Jones and classmate Kamil Pajkowski went 2-1, falling only to WMU’s 21st-ranked pair in Crosby and Tim Bradshaw. Parkes teamed with sophomore Miles Bugby, also producing a 2-1 record.
