The rankings for the 2007 women’s tennis season are in and the Lobos grabbed No. 45 in the nation according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association polls release January 9, 2007. These rankings are the first of 16 the ITA will release throughout the season.
In the individual rankings Ola Abou-Zekry achieves her first ever singles ranking at No. 62. Last year Abou-Zekry was ranked at No. 49 as a doubles team with partner Lucy Scott. She had a strong fall season with a victory over No. 51 Holly Bagshaw from SDSU as well wins against USC and Fresno State. Abou-Zekry finished the fall season with an 11-2 record, including a loss to teammate Iva Gersic in the final of the SDSU Fall Invite.
“This is a wonderful accomplishment,” head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz said, “for any player to achieve. Ola had a fantastic fall semester both academically and athletically. She is looking forward to a great spring.”
The individual rankings are the first of nine rankings to be released throughout the season.
There are five teams in the Mountain West Conference that are ranked in the top-50 this season. TCU is ranked No. 16 while BYU comes in at No. 30. San Diego State reached No. 39 and UNLV rounds out the conference at No. 48.
Last year the team began the season at No. 48 in the nation and ended at No. 45. The highest ranking New Mexico has ever received was No. 21 in their 2004 season.
