WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The New Mexico men’s tennis team participated at the Purdue Boilermaker Invitational held at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Ind. over the three-day weekend. The tournament was not scored as a team event but if it was, the Lobos would have blanked Kentucky, 7-0, edged out Western Michigan, 4-3, but dropped to Purdue, 4-3.
UNM claimed two doubles and two singles matches against Purdue on Saturday. Juniors Max Jones and Kamil Pajkowski defeated Purdue’s Paul Rose and Kurt Zaske, 8-5 while sophomore Johnny Parkes and sophomore Miles Bugby recorded an 8-5 victory over the Boilermakers’ Eric Hodgman and Jose Fuenmayer. In singles action, No. 73 Jones and Parkes showcased their talents winning their matches against their respective opponents.
The Lobos won four of the six singles matches against Western Michigan on Sunday, rallying after the Broncos won all three doubles matches. Jones upset No. 52 Brady Crosby (WMU), 6-4, 6-4, in straight sets. Parkes won at the would-be No. 2 position (6-4, 7-5) and sophmore Graeme Kassautzki beat Alex Birchmeier (WMU) 6-2, 6-3. Bugby was also victorious with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over Milan Petercak.
The Lobos concluded the tournament Monday with Kentucky, claiming five of the six singles in straight sets and swept all three doubles matches.
