The University of New Mexico Ski Team continued its slow start to the 2007 season falling to sixth place on the final day of the Utah Invitational in Park City, Utah, today. Only seniors Alex Mach and Lars Loeseth were able to place in the top-10 for the Lobos in four events today.
Mach, a 2006 All-American and the top ranked slalom skier in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association last season, placed third in today’s men’s slalom. Loeseth followed him with a fourth place finish. Freshman Jon Masdal also scored for the Lobos, placing 15th.
The women’s Alpine squad competed in two giant slalom runs and were led byKarin Ohlin’s 23rd place finish. Freshman Jessica Dakers (29th) and junior Amy Beresford (32nd) were the only other Lobos to finish two runs today.
2006 All-American Laura Van Alst paced the Lobo women in their 10K freestyle race with a 15th place finish today, just ahead of sophomore Crystin Jaques who finished 16th. Sophomore Melaine Zemp finished 20th.
Sophomore Casey Dyck had a strong showing in the men’s 20K freestyle with his 17th place finish. Other Lobos scoring points were freshman Vsevolod Soloviev (22nd) and senior Jedd Young (27th).
The Lobos’ sixth place finish is their worst result in a collegiate meet since placing sixth at the NCAA Championships in 1998. It is their lowest finish in an RMISA race since finishing sixth at the Western State Invitational in 1996.
The Lobos will try to rebound on Jan. 19-20 when the Nordic teams head to Bozeman, Mont., for their races in the Montana State Invitational. New Mexico is currently in fourth place in the MSU Invite after the Alpine slalom races. The giant slalom events were cancelled due to bad weather last weekend and will be made up at a later date.
