Senior Lars Loeseth scored a second place finish while sophomore Tor Fodnesbergene placed fifth in the men’s giant slalom as New Mexico only managed three top-10 times in four events on the opening day of the Utah Invite. The Lobos are currently in fifth place in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association event with 194 total points. Colorado has 292 points followed by Utah (281), Denver (256) and Alaska-Anchorage (221).

Loeseth posted a two-run time of 1:55.02, but Utah’s Tague Thorson won by over a full second with a time of 1:53.92. Fodnesbergene finished with a 1:55.94 mark after two runs. Freshman Jon Masdal rounded out the Lobo scoring with a 19th place finish. The men’s Alpine managed to tie for second in the event with 69 points. However, four Lobos did not finish the race, including Peter Roering, Alex Mach, Olivier Lacaille and Gary Beresford.

The women’s Alpine also saw just three races complete two runs, led by freshman Malin Hemmingson’s 14th place. Sophomore Karin Ohlin finished 20th while junior Amy Beresford came in 21st.

On the Nordic side, sophomore Crystin Jaques had the Lobos’ only other top-10 finish on the day, placing 10th in the women’s 5K Classic. Sophomore Melanie Zemp has a career-high 13th place sowing. The men’s Nordic team was led by freshman Vsevolod Soloviev 21st place finish.

The meet will conclude on Sunday with the men’s slalom, women’s giant slalom and Nordic freestyle races.
