The University of New Mexico ski team fought to a fourth place finish in the slalom portion of the Montana State Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate ski Association Invite at Big Sky Ski Area outside of Bozeman, Mont., today. Three Lobos finished in the top-10, but five of the 12 skiers did not finish their two runs, as many Lobos were still recovering from a stomach virus over the past few days. Colorado posted 152.5 points to lead the meet after one event, while UNM scored 118 points, also trailing Denver (129) and Nevada (120).
Sophomore Karin Ohlin led the women with a fifth place showing with a time of 1:31.49, over two seconds off the pace set by Colorado’s Lucie Zikova (1:29.15). Freshman Malin Hemingsson and junior Amy Beresford also scored for the Lobo women, placing 17th and 18th, respectively. New Mexico tied with Nevada for third place in the women’s slalom. Junior Lene Kaasa (28th) and freshman Jessica Dakers (34th) also raced for the Lobo women.
On the men’s side, UNM got strong performances from sophomore Tor Fodnesbergene and senior Alex Mach who finished fourth and fifth, respectively. However, five other Lobos fell during their two runs, leaving freshman Olivier Lacialle’s 37th place finish as the only other scoring mark.
“We had a lot of athletes who were still under the weather today,” stated UNM head coach George Brooks. “I think that is why you saw so many fall on the second run. They didn’t have the strength to finish strong. It was a good start considering the circumstances, but we know we have the talent to compete at the top by the end of season.”
The giant slalom races were postponed yesterday and the Nordic portion of the meet doesn’t take place until Jan. 19-20. UNM will next head to the Utah Invite on Jan. 13-14 in Heber, Utah.
