LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) – Julie Briody scored 19 points as No. 23 New Mexico beat rival New Mexico State 65-45 on Tuesday night, the Lobos’ 22nd consecutive win in the series and second this season.
The last time NMSU (4-7) beat the Lobos (9-2) was a 78-73 double overtime win in Las Cruces on Dec. 22, 1995.
Katie Montgomery scored 14 points for New Mexico and Angela Hartill added 10.
Sherell Neal and Cecilia Russell-Nava led the Aggies with 11 points each.
New Mexico didn’t have a good shooting night overall, but it was 3-pointers that made the difference. The Lobos were 8-for-14 from 3-point range, including four by Briody.
The Aggies struggled to keep up, going 4-for-13 on 3s.
The Lobos led 37-21 at the half and started the second by missing their first nine shots, a streak that ended when Briody hit back-to-back 3s to stretch the lead to 47-29 with 12:17 remaining.
During the same period, New Mexico’s defense buckled down and forced the Aggies to miss their shots. NMSU hit 4-for-11 to open the half.
The Lobos outrebounded the Aggies 41-31, including 16-8 on the offensive glass.
New Mexico won the first meeting of the season against New Mexico State, 81-47 in Albuquerque.
