University of New Mexico defender Simon Ejdemyr was named 1st Team Freshman All-American today by CollegeSoccerNews.com. Ejdemyr started 19 of 20 games in his first year as a Lobo, becoming just the third freshman All-American in school history.
Ejdemyr stepped in and had a solid freshman campaign as a central defender, helping the Lobos to a 0.64 goals-against-average and 11 shutouts. A native of Boras, Sweden, Ejdemyr was also named 1st Team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation following the 2006 season. At 6-3, 190, Ejdemyr was a physical presence in the middle and helped New Mexico control balls in the air.
UNM finished the season with a 14-4-3 record that included an 8-1-1 mark in MPSF action. The Lobos won their third consecutive MPSF title and the school’s fifth in the last six seasons. New Mexico also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the past six years. Ejdemyr joins Brandon Moss (2002-05) and Ben Ashwill (2002-05) as the only other freshmen All-Americans at the University of New Mexico.
