Dec. 4, 2006
University of New Mexico senior defender Andrew Boyens was named 1st Team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America today. Boyens joins Jeff Rowland (2002-05) as just the second two-time All-American in school history.
Boyens, a native of Dunedin, New Zealand, was a third team All-American last season after helping guide New Mexico to the finals of the 2005 College Cup. In 2006, he earned all-region recognition for the third time in his career while leading UNM to a 14-4-3 mark and its third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. He was named to the 2006 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year after scoring two goals and three assists while guiding the Lobo defense to a 0.64 goals-against-average and 11 shutouts this season.
A three-time 1st Team All-MPSF selection, Boyens has been selected to participate in the 2007 adidas MLS Player Combine in January. For a complete list of the 2006 NSCAA All-American teams click here.
