UPDATE – University of New Mexico junior linebacker Cody Kase was announced today as a second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. Kase is the fifth player in program history to be earn Academic All-America honors and the first since Chad Smith in 1998. A General Mangement major, Kase’s 4.01 cumulative grade point average was the highest of all the Academic All-America honorees.

The Valencia, Calif. native has been one of the most productive players on the Lobo defense since returning from a hamstring injury which he suffered in the season opener. Over the past seven games, Kase has 33 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss (-30 yards), 3 sacks (-21 yards), 9 quarterback hurries and 2 interceptions, including a 47-yard return for a touchdown at UNLV, since returning to full duty on Oct. 7.

He was named Mountain West Conference Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career on Nov. 27 after recording a season-high 8 tackles (6 solo), matching his career-high with 2 sacks (-15 yards) and recording an interception in New Mexico’s bowl clinching victory over San Diego State.
