The University of New Mexico has accepted an invitation to participate in the inaugural New Mexico Bowl. The game will be played Saturday, Dec. 23, at 2:30 p.m. at University Stadium in Albuquerque and be broadcast live nationally by ESPN. It will match UNM against a representative from the Western Athletic Conference.

UNM became bowl eligible Saturday with a 41-14 victory over San Diego State. The Lobos, who started the season 2-4, are 6-6 overall and finished MWC play with a 4-4 record.

New Mexico is making its fourth bowl appearance in the past five seasons under head coach Rocky Long. It’s the 10th bowl game overall for UNM since 1939. The Lobos have been bowl eligible for six straight seasons, the only school in the Mountain West Conference that can make that claim.

New Mexico is 2-6-1 in nine previous bowls, and it has lost four straight. The last win was in 1961, a 28-12 decision over Western Michigan in the one-time-only Aviation Bowl in Dayton, Ohio.

Tickets for the New Mexico Bowl are $30. They are $15 for UNM students. Tickets are available online at newmexicombowl.com and unmtickets.com, by calling (505) 925-5858 and at the UNM ticket office at The Pit.
