The University of New Mexico Nordic ski team hit the slopes for the first competition of the season yesterday in West Yellowstone, Mont. The Lobos competed in sprint races against some of the top skiers in the country and many collegiate teams including Utah, Colorado, Nevada, Montana, Whitman, Middlebury and Dartmouth.
Freshman Polina Ermoshina finished 15th out of 87 skiers in the women’s 800M. She placed fourth in her individual heat for an excellent start to her first season as a Lobo. Sophomore Melanie Zemp also had a strong showing with a 29th place finish.
On the men’s side, sophomore Erlend Saetre came in 19th out of 115 starters in the men’s 800M sprint classic. Fellow sophomore Casey Dyck finished 20th while freshman Vsevolod Soloviev placed 79th.
The Lobos continue racing today with a women’s 10K classic and men’s 15K classic in West Yellowstone, Mont.
