University of New Mexico men’s soccer sophomore Chris Wright was named to the ESPN The Magazine 2nd Team Academic All-American squad for the 2006 season. Wright, a 6-5 forward from Fair Oaks, Calif., is a pre-Med major with a 4.10 grade-point-average and started 19 of 21 games for the 14-4-3 Lobos this season.

Wright led New Mexico in scoring with 15 points on six goals and three assists in 2006. He earned 2nd Team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors after leading the conference in scoring against NCAA competition. Wright also helped guide the Lobos to their third consecutive MPSF title and their fifth trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in the last six years.

UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein continues his tradition of producing results on the field as well as in the classroom. New Mexico’s 14 wins in 2006 are tied for the fourth most in school history while Wright’s award makes four straight years at least one Lobo has earned Academic All-American honors. Six different Lobos have earned Academic All-American honors in Fishbein’s five years at UNM after only three in the previous 19-year history of the program.

Wright was also joined by seniors Andrew Boyens and Lars Loeseth, junior Joey Vitagliano and sophomore Mike Porter on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI team.
