San Diego, Calif. – In the first day of the San Diego State University Invitational the Lobo women’s tennis team advanced three singles to the semifinals and two doubles teams to the quarterfinal rounds today.
The team looked strong with both Iva Gersic and Ola Abou-Zekry going 3-0 on their day today. Gersic dominated her opponents Danon Beatty from Fresno State in a 6-3, 6-2 match and Jessica Hoath from Saint Mary’s College in a 6-3, 6-3 match to start off her singles rounds. Abou-Zekry was right along with her as she had a 6-1, 6-4 match against Saint Mary’s Femke Strijbis and a blow out 6-1, 6-1 against Holly Bagshaw from SDSU. Together Abou-Zekry and Gersic won their first round of the doubles matches after taking on Lindstrand and Perl from USD (8-5).
Freshman Sandra Zmak also had a 3-0 day after advancing to the semifinal round of the Flight Two singles. She took on Esther Cadua from SDSU in a tough 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 match and then went on to dominate Stef Ordoveza from Saint Mary’s (6-2, 6-2). She teamed with Jennifer Ryba in the round-robin doubles draw for a victory against Demidova and Weisner from USD (8-4). Lucy Scott and Maria Sotirchos advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Flight One doubles with a close 9-7 win against Strijbis and Young from Saint Mary’s to round out today’s victories.
