With both the basketball teams getting underway, I was anxious to watch my first game in The Pit. Last night’s women’s game was my first in the facility and I was very impressed with the team and the fan support. It would appear Coach Flanagan has another outstanding squad. Obviously, like all Lobo fans, I am excited about seeing the men’s team for the first time tonight.
Watching the game, I couldn’t help but think of what a great basketball facility The Pit is and the challenges and responsibilities that come with renovating such a historic arena. Much of our athletic heritage is tied to this remarkable venue and it is critical we take no shortcuts in preserving all that is great with The Pit while modernizing the facility.
The design team has been chosen for the renovation project and planning will be under way shortly. The firms of Molzen-Corbin & Associates of Albuquerque and Sink Combs Dethlefs of Denver have been selected for this historic project. These firms combined to work on the recently completed Davalos Center.
Finally, I know there have been a number of legitimate concerns and comments relative to our new MWC TV package. I will be weighing in with my thoughts in the next few days on both the short term and long term view of this trend-setting deal. Suffice it to say we are experiencing some growing pains but I will save my comments for another day.
