WILMINGTON, N.C. — The No. 16 ranked New Mexico women’s golf team shot a 5-over par 293 in the finals of the Landfall Tradition Golf Tournament to placed third at the par-72, 6,072-yard Jack Nicklaus Golf Course. The Lobos finished 40-over par for the tournament and only two shots out of first place. UNM completes the fall season with two Lobos finishing in the top-10 individually.
Sophomore Mikaela Backstedt finished tied for third individually at 6-over par 222 and was even-par in the final round. The third place finish was the highest for Backstedt (77-73-72=222) this fall. Junior Giselle Claux also finished in the top-10 after carding a 3-over par 75. Claux tied for sixth and fired a 75 in all three rounds finishing with a total score of 225.
Freshman Jodi Ewart and sophomore Py Bengtsson both shot a 1-over par 73 in the final round. Ewart (77-77-73=227) finished in 12th place at 11-over par for the event. Bengtsson (80-77-73=230) tied for 14th on the leaderboard and carded a total of 230.
UNM sophomore Morgan Grantham finished her second tournament of the fall and tied for 41st. Grantham (89-78-76=243) fired a 4-over par 76 in the finals and improved 13 shots from the first day to the third day.
Virginia and Michigan State tied for the tournament lead after finish 38-over par. The Lobos placed third at 40-over par, while Wake Forest and Michigan round out the top-five. Sara Brown of Michigan State shot a 1-under par 215 and took home the individual title. Wake Forest’s Mandy Goins was second at 3-over par 219 with Backstedt and Brianna Broderick of Michigan tied for third.
