LAS VEGAS – The Lobo volleyball team fell at UNLV tonight in three straight games, dropping to 7-17 overall and 3-9 in the Mountain West Conference. The Rebels won 30-28, 30-17, 30-17.
New Mexico took advantage of poor hitting on the Rebels’ part late in game one, clawing back from a nine point deficit (14-5) to finally tie the match at 24. Still tied at 28, the Lobos committed two attack errors of their own, handing UNLV the win.
UNLV never looked back after the 1-1 tie, using two 4-0 and one 8-0 run en route to the win. The Rebels hit .471 (18K-2E-34TA) while holding the Lobos to just a .068 (12K-9E-44TA) attack percentage.
The Lobos started off game three with a 3-0 lead. The Rebels fought back and tied the match at 7 before falling behind again. Down 11-9, UNLV’s offense was ignited, outscoring UNM 21-6 to clinch the match.
Senior Kelly Therkelsen led the Lobos with eight kills while sophomore Jeanne Fairchild and freshman Allison Suiter each added seven. Sophomore Gayle Tripp posted a match-high 22 digs. UNLV’s Maria Aladjova recorded a match-high 22 kills while teammate Lauren Miramontes hit .778 (7K-0E-9TA).
The Lobos return home, hosting 18th-ranked BYU and 10th-ranked Utah. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night in Johnson Center.
