WILMINGTON, N.C. — The 16th-ranked University of New Mexico women’s golf team shot 21-over par Friday in the first round of the Landfall Tradition Collegiate Golf Tournament held at the Jack Nicklaus Course. The Lobos are tied for fifth and were led by junior Giselle Claux. Claux fired a 3-over par 75 and is tied for 10th on the leaderboard.

Freshman Jodi Ewart and sophomore Mikaela Backstedt finished the opening round 5-over par 77 and are tied for 17th. Sophomore Py Bengtsson carded an 8-over par 80 and is tied for 34th individually.

Sophomore Morgan Grantham was 17-over par 89 and sits in 59th place heading into the second round. This is only the second tournament this fall for Grantham, who competed last weekend at the Stanford Intercollegiate.

UNM had eight birdies as a team, despite rain early in the day. The Lobos move into the second round nine shots out of the lead.

Three players stand in a tie for the clubhouse lead as Virginia’s Jennie Arseneault, Michigan’s Broderick and the Buckeye’s Dana Je each carded an even-par 72. Megan Padua from Penn State stands one shot back at 73.

Michigan leads the event at 12-over par and remains one shot better than Virginia in second. Ohio State and Michigan State are tied for third after shooting 17-over par in the opening round.

The second day of the 54-hole event hosted by UNC Wilmington gets under way Saturday at 8:17 a.m. Live scoring of the event is available at www.Golfstat.com.
