PALO ALTO, Calif. – The No. 15 ranked New Mexico women’s golf team shot 7-over par in the second round of the Stanford Intercollegiate to move into a tie for fifth with No. 2 Duke. The Lobos finished three shots better than their opening round score at the par 71, 6,107-yard Stanford Golf Course. UNM freshman Jodi Ewart carded a 70 in the round and remains tied for fourth individually.
The Lobos as a team are 17-over par for the tournament and are in close battle for fourth place with No. 2 Duke (+17) and No. 9 Vanderbilt (+12). No. 6 Stanford leads the event after shooting 4-under par after two rounds. No. 12 Arizona followed the Cardinal in second and No. 1 Georgia is in third place. Vanderbilt sits in fourth place, followed by the Lobos and Duke.
Ewart (69-70=139) had the best round after firing a 1-under par 70. Ewart needs to make up three shots to pull even with Whitney Wade of Georgia for the individual lead.
Junior Alexandra Phelps and sophomore Mikaela Backstedt (76-73=149) were 2-over par 73 in the second round. Phelps (72-73=145) is tied for 20th individually and moved up one spot from the opening round. Backstedt was three shots better than the first round and is 7-over par for the tournament. Backstedt is tied for 34th heading into the finals.
Sophomores Py Bengtsson (77-75=152) and Morgan Grantham (84-78=162) round out the lineup for the Lobos. Bengtsson shot a 75 and sits in 49th place on the individual board. Grantham had the biggest adjustment for UNM, shooting six shots better in the second round. Grantham jumped into a tie for 70th and remains 20-over par for the tournament.
