PALO ALTO, Calif. — Freshman Jodi Ewart shot a season-best 69 to highlight the No. 15 New Mexico women’s golf team at the 2006 Stanford Intercollegiate. The Lobos finish 10-over par and sit in sixth place after the opening round. UNM had 13 birdies at the par-71, 6,107-yard Stanford Golf Course.

“I thought we played well today against a strong field,” said UNM head coach Jackie Booth. “We are just a few shots out of the top-five and I feel like we are in a good position. Jodi (Ewart) and Alexandra (Phelps) played well and were consistent. Py (Bengtsson) and Mikaela (Backstedt) had a couple of bad holes early but were able to fight back. We are off to a really good start and we have an opportunity to make a run in the second round.”

Ewart fired a 2-under par 69 and is currently tied for fourth individually. Heading into the second round, Ewart is two shots back of Georgia’s Whitney Wade and Arizona’s Alison Walshe.

Junior Alexandra Phelps had her best round of the fall after shooting a 1-over par 72. Phelps finished the round in a five-way tie for 21st. In the round, Phelps carded three birdies including one on the front and two on the back nine.

Sophomores Py Bengtsson, Mikaela Backstedt and Morgan Grantham also competed for the Lobos. Backstedt shot a 76 and finished 5-over par for the day. Backstedt enters the second round tied for 41st, while Bengtsson is tied for 48th after carding a 6-over par 77. Grantham was 13-over par 84 and is tied for 73rd.

No. 12 Arizona holds a seven shot team lead after shooting a 7-under par in the opening round. No. 1 Georgia was even in the round and placed second. No. 6 Stanford is hosting the event and finished 2-over to take third. No. 9 Vanderbilt and No. 2 Duke round out the top-five with the Lobos knocking on the door.

The Stanford Intercollegiate continues Saturday morning. UNM is paired with Vanderbilt and Duke in the second round. Live scoring of the event can be found at www.Golfstat.com. For more information about UNM athletics visit www.GoLobos.com.
