SAMMAMISH, Wash. — The 28th-ranked New Mexico women’s golf team finished second today at the 2006 Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational held at the par 72, 6,130-yard Sahalee Country Club. The Lobos had their highest finish of the year after shooting a 13-over par 301 as a team in the final round. Freshman Jodi Ewart finished second individually and led UNM for the second consecutive tournament.
Ewart (71-75-71=217), has dominated in her first two collegiate tournaments, shot a 1-under par 71 in the final round. Ewart had six birdies on the day and shot 2-under on the back nine. Her second place finish was a career-high.
Sophomore Py Bengtsson (72-75-73=220) was consistent in the finals, firing a 1-over par 73 and placed fifth. Bengtsson was even on the back nine and finished 4-over par 220 in the tournament. Junior Giselle Claux (80-74-77=231) tied for 21st individually, after carding a 5-over par 77. Claux had the third highest finish for UNM and her highest finish of the year.
Junior Alexandra Phelps (80-76-81=237) and sophomore Mikaela Backstedt (78-79-80=237) finished the tournament 21-over par 216. Phelps shot an 81 in the final round with three birdies. Backstedt carded an 80 on the final day with two birdies.
UNM finished higher than nationally-ranked No. 5 Arizona State, No. 4 Arizona, No. 17 Southern California and No. 20 BYU. Stanford took home the team title with UNM coming in second. Arizona State was third, Pepperdine fourth and USC fifth. Individually, Mari Chun earned the championship with a 54-hole score of 215 (-1).
UNM is scheduled to compete in the Stanford Intercollegiate held in Palo Alto, Calif., on Oct. 20-22. The Lobos have two fall events remaining before starting the spring season on Feb. 26-27 at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. For more information about UNM athletics visit www.GoLobos.com.
