SAMMAMISH, Wash. — Freshman Jodi Ewart shot a 1-under par 71 to lead New Mexico to a second place tie through the opening round of the 2006 Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational held at the par-72, 6,130-yard Sahalee Country Club. The Lobos finished the first round with a team score of 301 and sit two shots behind nationally-ranked Arizona State.

Ewart had four birdies in the round and finished in third place individually. Ewart was even after the first nine but two birdies on the back helped pave the way for a 1-under performance. Ewart heads into second round three shots behind leader Mari Chun (Stanford).

Sophomore Py Bengtsson fired an even round 72 in the first round and is in sole possession of fourth place. Bengtsson collected two birdies on the day to help pace the Lobos. Juniors Alexandra Phelps and Giselle Claux both shot 80 and are tied for 45th. Sophomore Mikaela Backstedt shot a 6-over par 78 and is tied for 35th individually. UNM had nine birdies as a team in the opening round.

Arizona State finished at 11-over (299) and currently sit a top the leader board. The Lobos and Arizona are tied for second (+13), while Pepperdine is in fourth and Stanford and BYU are tied in fifth.
