POSTGAME QUOTES
New Mexico vs. Wyoming
Saturday, October 7, 2006
University Stadium – Albuquerque, N.M.
New Mexico Head Coach Rocky Long
(On the offensive struggles):”Players not playing very well. If we’re making assignment errors that makes it hard to do it. If we don’t execute our assignment, even if we know our assignment, you don’t move the ball on offense. If you don’t throw it very well, if you don’t catch it very well, there’s a whole list of things that we didn’t do very well.”
(On what second half adjustments UNM made):”We made some adjustments at halftime. You can’t tell when it’s that bad but we made some adjustments at halftime that we thought we could take advantage of that would give us a better chance to move the ball in the second half. You can have the best Xs and Os in the world but if you don’t make plays and don’t execute you’re not going to play very well.”
New Mexico Freshman QB Donovan Porterie
“[The Wyoming defense] didn’t do anything that we didn’t expect. Our timing was off. I thought there were plays to be made. We just didn’t get it done. It hurts losing but we just have to go back out there and get to work. At this point we have to have a short term memory. This game is over, we have to move on.”
Wyoming Head Coach Joe Glenn
“We persevered today. Our kids hung in there and it was a big test to their mental game. It was a big comeback for our quarterback from one half to the next. I thought (offensive coordinator) Bill Cockhill did a great job of putting a big offense in there. When we go big, we put in two and sometimes three tight ends in the game. We start hammering and basically go to a goal line offense. It helps to take some pressure off the quarterback.”
“This is a defense that flies around and it takes time to find your way into it. Once we started to play it we got better. Our offense got a lot better and the defense shut them out in the second half. It was a comeback by a team that hasn’t won in a month. I take my hat off to the guys. They fought hard and deserved to win.”
