Sept. 19, 2006
New Mexico freshman defender Simon Ejdemyr was named the Brine-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week for Sept. 18. Ejdemyr led UNM to a 1-1 tie vs. No. 1 SMU at the UNM Soccer Complex on Friday night, holding the high-powered Mustangs offense to just one goal. He also had a strong game in the Lobos’ 1-0 shutout of Tulsa on Sunday.
Ejdemyr, a 6-3 native of Boras, Sweden, is in his first season of collegiate soccer after a long career as a standout youth player. SMU had been averaging nearly three goals per game, but were shutdown for the final 67 minutes of action on Friday night. Ejdemyr was also a huge factor in dismantling the Hurricane attack on Sunday while helping the Lobos record their fourth shutout of the season.
Ejdemyr is the second Lobo to earn the Brine MPSF Player of the Week honor this season. Junior keeper Mike Graczyk was also Player of the Week following on Aug. 28 after shutting out Portland on the road.
UNM concludes in non-conference action this weekend with the 2006 New Mexico Youth Soccer Association Classic hosted by Fairfield Inn-University at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos face American (3-4-1) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) followed by College of Charleston (5-2-1) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (M.D.T.).
